The wrong words on your resume
Michelle Minten of Hudson was on CNN's "In the money" show today. She gave some great advice about the words that you should have on you resume. Stay away from using "I". Instead use bullets that start with an action verb. An example is " Saved corporation 30 Million dollars by deveoping an improved CRM application" .

Job References You Can't Control
Anjali Athavaley has written an interesting article in today's Wall Street Journal. The subject of the article is that recruiters and HR people are contacting candidate's contacts listed on sites such as LinkedIn or Jobster to use as references. As a recruiter I do not take much stalk in this. I for example, have 1600 contacts on LinkedIN and 350 on Jobster. I know probably 30 of those personally. I am an open networker that has built the netwwork in order to gain access to a wider group of people. I think I probably am the norm on this. What do you think?

If That Guy Earned A Promotion, Mine Can't Be Far Behind
Here is a great article from JARED SANDBERG of the Wall Stree Journal. It really goes to show that you need to keep your head in the game at work. Many of us get too comfortable in our position untill something jolts us out of our comfort zone.
Don't knock colleagues who fail upward. They may be exasperating, bad for business and prove that a company rewards something other than hard work and skill. But they can be great for the ego.
When Peter Brockman worked for a high-tech company, he witnessed a peer get a promotion to a job Mr. Brockman thought was well over his head. Holy cow, he thought to himself, how did that happen?
At first it was a blow to his confidence, he says. "But then it helps it. I was emboldened." His colleague's success prompted him to start discussions with his boss that led to a promotion, 30% raise and options just three months later. Had that colleague not been promoted, he says, "I wouldn't have felt it, or thought about it."
We build self-esteem not just through the acquisition of skill and pride in our work. We also derive it from the conviction that the guy in the next desk who just got a killer promotion is a bigger schlep than we are.
It's all part of what's called social-comparison theory: We compare ourselves with others because it can feel great. Sometimes, we engage in "upward social comparison" to higher status individuals to improve our self-image by pointing out similarities. (Hey, I'm a Mets fan, too, ergo, EVP material).
We also make "downward social comparisons" to thank our lucky stars that our troubles aren't so bad. At the office, even the mousiest employees can feel emboldened simply by witnessing relatively more clueless recruits joining the company every year.
Accountant Joe Pizzileo, cocky coming out of school, was less so when he showed up for work at a big accounting firm. "I felt like the little kid in the Wheaties commercial that was wearing his dad's suit," he says. Among the things that rebuilt his confidence: "As a fresh group of peons came in every year you became that guy that they were looking up to," he says.
The tendency for upward social comparison begins when one realizes company leaders aren't the wizards you thought -- mild letdowns that are real picker-uppers. Over time, several instances led software engineer John Traylor to conclude that: A) a boss has "intellectual limitations just like we all do," and B) "I'm as good a mortal," he says.
When he once rushed past a secretary to speak to an executive, she tried to stop him, implying the boss was busy with important work. "He was playing Solitaire," he says.
In a study conducted by Lee D. Ross, professor of psychology at Stanford University, Ph.D. students taking oral examinations believed they didn't know as much as their questioners. But the questioner didn't feel he knew more than the answerer. Put another way, just because someone knows the answer to his own question doesn't mean he knows much more than that, even though he seems to.
"Confidence can come from learning to have more realistic standards of what competence looks like -- learning to distinguish the real fakes from the fake fakes," he says.
The danger of such self-medicating with social comparison is an overdose of confidence. There are injured egos and distractions for managers who have to engage in coddle-fests for people whose ambition laps their talents.
But if, as the Peter Principle notes, colleagues around you will advance to the level of their incompetence, can you blame someone for trying to make sense of it?
"One guy didn't know crap about marketing," recalls Jennifer Rook of a former colleague who was promoted. "We came to the conclusion [his promotion] was because he was tall."
Ann Garcia, who has witnessed ineffective vice presidents prosper despite the fact they "carved this trail of tears through the organization," doesn't allow people who might sound smart clip her self-image just because they can talk about, say, "organizational silos."
She went through phases of admiration, then scorn and now simply tries to find out what companies value.
Adds Stanford's Prof. Ross: "There sometimes also comes a point when you realize what makes the people you thought were mediocre, good. FDR, for example: second-class intellect, but first-class temperament."

Creativity:
The problem is never how to get new, innovative thoughts into your mind, but how to get old ones out. Every mind is a room packed with archaic furniture. You must get the old furniture of what you know, think, and believe out before anything new can get in. Make an empty space in any corner of your mind, and creativity will instantly fill it.

IT Faculty Survey
Here is a post the Gene Babon has done on his Blog
http://beantownweb.blogspot.com/2007/09/it-faculty-survey.html
IT Faculty Survey
Young professionals looking at career options should heed the advice of information technology (IT) instructors at colleges and universities.
Survey Says . . .
According to a recent survey, the two categories of applications that IT instructors rated student proficiency levels as "limited" or “no proficiency” are as follows:
-database applications (68 percent)
-spreadsheets (46 percent)
Here are the remaining technology skills in which students are considered most lacking by IT instructors:
-graphic design software
-multimedia applications
-web creation
-web conferencing
According to the survey results, IT instructors expect that more than half of their students will utilize IT skills in their careers after graduation.
The survey results included nearly 800 faculty members, who teach IT courses at four- or two-year colleges and universities. Cengage Learning, formerly Thomson Learning, sponsored this second annual technology survey. A summary is available for review.
The Opportunity
The survey concludes: "This is not a skill set confined to particular major or career interest – it is a life skill."
The Web is calling and young professionals are surprisingly lacking in training in how to use graphic design software and related Web creation tools. Not-so-surprising, young professionals are most ill-prepared to manage data in database applications.
Conclusion
A web professional with database knowledge should continue to do well in today's knowledge economy. As reported consistently in Beantown Web, database knowledge in the form of structured query language (SQL) is the most in-demand technical skill (see right-hand column).
high SQL demand + low SQL supply = employment opportunity
If you are new to SQL, the best training opportunity available in September is self-paced training. Check out a newly released book entitled Head First SQL (Your Brain on SQL -- A Learner's Guide). A 50% discount coupon code offer applies until the end of September when ordering directly from O'Reilly Media. Combined with free shipping, an investment of under $23 is a nominal price to pay for an significant upside of career opportunities.

Business links lead to local tests of new chip
By Daniel Connolly - Memphis Commercial Appeal
Thursday, September 13, 2007
When computer chip maker Intel Corp. presents a video promoting its vPro processor, it will feature scenes from an unlikely place: a commercial real estate office in Memphis.
A string of business relationships led Santa Clara, Calif.-based Intel to choose one of the Memphis offices of CB Richard Ellis as a test site for the new chip.
Intel plans to use the office as an example of how the new chip allows information technology professionals to manage computers from a long distance, even when the machines are turned off or have crashed, said J. Michael Drake, chairman and CEO of Bartlett-based masterIT LLC, a firm that offers a range of information technology services to companies.
Drake said the chip, formally known as Intel vPro Processor Technology, allows computer professionals to perform tasks such as installing software updates when computers aren't turned on.
"The other thing is that, God forbid, if there was a crash, whether it be of a server or a PC, we would have the ability to access the chip even if the computer is down," he said.
Here's how the real estate office ended up as a test site:
Intel worked on the vPro project with Ottawa-based N-Able Technologies, a company that makes software for remote monitoring of computer networks.
That firm, in turn, contacted masterIT, one of its customers, said Gavin Garbutt, N-Able's president and CEO.
"It's absolutely safe to say that masterIT is one of the top managed service providers in North America," Garbutt said.
Then the Memphis firm picked one of its existing clients, CB Richard Ellis, for the test. Drake said he picked the firm because it makes proactive use of technology. For instance, it recently installed a telephone system based on the Internet.
The real estate firm relies on computers for everything from accounting to dealing with maintenance requests at its office buildings, said Mary F. Sharp, CB Richard Ellis' chief operating officer in Memphis.
The testing only involved three of the Memphis market's 70 computers and didn't interrupt work, she said.
"We don't see disruption, and that's the most important thing for our operations because downtime is critical," she said. "We have very strict deadlines for reporting, and we have to meet those deadlines."
Intel plans to describe the test in a written case study and a video that is scheduled air in venues that include trade shows, Drake said.

Technology at School
While at my son's open house we heard a lot about how bad the technology is in their school. Here his Math Teacher explains how she can't connect to her web page. Technology is an important learning tool.
Live and breath technology
I got out of the Army in 1997. As you all know 1997 was an amazing time in Technology. The world was amazed with the still relatively new Internet. I was and still am amazed. I am obsessed with how information is shared (among other things). I think THAT is the beauty of the Internet and Technology in general. The fact that I can sit here in the middle of a field in Tennessee while watching my daughter's soccer practice and post to my blog via my palm is still amazing to me. Live and breath innovation.
Jobless Claims Rise in Latest Week
By BRIAN BLACKSTONESeptember 13, 2007 8:47 a.m.
WASHINGTON -- The number of U.S. workers filing new claims for jobless benefits rose slightly last week but remained at levels consistent with generally healthy labor markets, despite last month's surprising drop in employment.
Jobless claims rose 4,000 to 319,000 on a seasonally adjusted basis in the week ended Sept. 8, the Labor Department said Thursday. Claims for the Sept. 1 week were revised to 315,000 from 318,000. Last week's survey period included the Labor Day holiday.
Wall Street forecasts had called for a 2,000 rise last week to 320,000, according to a Dow Jones Newswires survey.
The four-week average -- which economists use to gauge underlying labor market trends -- fell by 1,000 last week to 324,000, the second-straight drop.
Investors are closely watching U.S. labor markets in the wake of a report last week showing that nonfarm payrolls fell 4,000 in August, the first decline in four years. That drop fueled hopes that the Federal Reserve will lower the fed funds rate by 50 basis points when it meets next week, though many economists expect a smaller 25-basis-point cut. Officials haven't lowered the fed funds rate in more than four years.
Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke has that the Fed will watch the data to gauge whether the recent housing and credit crunch is affecting the broader economy. Jobless claims are the most up-to-date indicator the government publishes, giving them a higher profile than usual.
According to the Labor Department report Thursday, continuing claims for workers drawing unemployment benefits for more than a week fell 6,000 to 2,585,000 in the week ended Sept. 1, the latest week for which such data are available. The four-week average for continuing claims was at its highest level since January 2006, suggesting unemployed workers are finding it harder to get new work.
The insured unemployment rate was 2% in the Sept. 1 week, unchanged from the previous week.
There were 24 states and territories reporting an increase in initial jobless claims for the Sept. 1 week, while 29 reported a decrease. New York had the biggest decrease, 1,573, thanks to fewer layoffs in transportation, service and manufacturing industries. Texas reported the sharpest increase, 1,529, due to layoffs in public administration, service, finance and manufacturing industries.
