It's all about attitude at work

I admit it. My attitude at work has been bad lately. That's one reason that I am so looking forward to a weeks vacation. Hopefully I can turn it around. I'm not the kind of person that will make excuses about my attitude. After all, we are all overworked and under appreciated.

This mourning I went to IHOP to eat breakfast. The people that know me knot that this is one of my favorite activities post work out. At IHOP they have a server named Ed. Ed's attitude is fantastic. He is very polite and works his ass off to make sure that he provides the best service to every customer that comes in. He never forgets what I drink, he just brings it to me.

Ed reminds me of the book "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People" by Stephen Covey. In work as in life, we see the world through our perspective. Our work is neither good or bad. Our perception is what make us think if it is good or bad. Gandhi said, "They cannot take away our self respect if we do not give it to them". Our response to what happens to us affects us more then what actually happened.

So, be like Ed and take pride in your work and enjoy it.

Vacation and Productivity at Work

My looming vacation next week has gotten me to thinking. Thinking about how much I really need this vacation. Thinking about how much my productivity at work really needs this vacation.

A quick search of Vacation and Productivity on the Google came up with an article with an amazing statistic. It said that:

Nearly one of every three American workers is vacation-deprived

Yet another statistic about how hard Americans work. It seems like the only time that we get time off is when we're unemployed (which means a lot of Americans are "Vacationing" this summer). In France it’s the law: full-time workers in France are guaranteed at least five weeks vacation. Just another reason those French bastards are lucky.

So, next week as I'm secretly anxious about not being at work (because in my mind my company can not live without me) I will also be thinking about why are legislature has not already guaranteed us at least 5 weeks vacation. Just maybe another promise I'll make during my Presidential campaign.

If

If you're disappointed with your current job, you  may be asking too much of it.

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you
But make allowance for their doubting too,
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
Or being hated, don’t give way to hating,
And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise:
If you can dream–and not make dreams your master,
If you can think–and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build ‘em up with worn-out tools:
If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it all on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breath a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: “Hold on!”
If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with kings–nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you;
If all men count with you, but none too much,
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,
And–which is more–you’ll be a Man, my son!

Admin Receptionist resume

I'm currently hiring a Administrative Receptionist for our Corporate office. I spent some time on the phone with a candidate yesterday because she was not able to upload her resume into are web site. It turns out that she had saved her resume as a .dot file instead of a .doc. file. This position calls for mastery of Microsoft Word and she did not make a good impression. Here is an explanation of the .dot extension in case your not familiar with it.

Template created by Microsoft Word, a word processing application; contains pre-formatted document settings, such as headers, footers, margins, font sizes, and other common page styles; used to create multiple documents that have similar formatting, such as company letterheads, business memos, or envelopes.

Some templates are included with Microsoft Word while others are created by Word users; the Normal template (Normal.dot file) stores the default document template that is opened when users open Word.

How to find a job to help pay for College

Question: I am an 18 year-old recent High School grad who has never worked before. I have made pretty good grades, graduating with a 3.4918 GPA (unweighted) and am very proud of it. Due to parents who work and no money to get my license or a car, I was also never able to do volunteer work either. I need to still pay about $2000 for my tuition alone and am in the process of getting my license and a car. This will bring on car payments and car insurance payments as well. My father just retired (he's 67) and my mom is still doing her best to get her business up and running. Unfortunately, she also lives on the other side of town. What I am trying to say is that all the jobs I have seen are not even willing to hire someone and train them. What am I supposed to do for job experience if no one is willing to hire me? I need some advice on where the best places are to go or if I should just get a student loan that is large enough to carry my up coming bills until I can start working with my mom.

Answer: There is a site that will allow you to search and apply to entry level positions in your area. Gone are the days when you had to go from store to store filling our applications. You can now do it all online.
